Older workers who appeared to be at risk of for developing adverse health effects one or more questions answered with 'yes' were excluded from the Vital Work study. This study was approved by the Medical Ethics Committee of the VU university medical center.

Of the participants of the Vital Work study, workers completed a 2-km UKK walk test at baseline and were therefore included in this study. Vitality was measured by two vitality questionnaires: 1 the RAND vitality scale [ 22 ] was used to measure vitality in general, and 2 the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale UWES vitality scale was used to measure vitality in the specific occupational setting of this study, namely older workers [ 10 ].
